Why You Should Always Carry a Sketchbook (Online art lesson #60)

Have you ever seen a view that you wanted to draw when you couldn’t actually sit in that location?  Do you set out from home knowing that you don’t have room in your schedule to sit and make art?  Carry your sketchbook anyhow!  You really never know.  The Universe is full of surprises indeed.

There are views along I70 that I’ve always enjoyed.  While returning from giving a workshop last weekend,  the car I was riding in broke down near the Continental Divide.

I finally got to draw that view.  It took the tow truck awhile to arrive; just about enough time to soak in the view.  But only because I had the supplies with me.

Your assignment this week is to carry your sketchbook (it can be a tiny one) everywhere because you never know what’s about to happen.  I’m sure you’ll find time to use it.

Lemonade is very refreshing, and sometimes life serves you the lemons for free.

“Why You Should Always Carry a Sketchbook” is a great post. My watercolor kit is so small and light that it is worth carrying “just in case” I have a few minutes.

    It has changed my life.

ha! Lillian, I just had to chuckle at the image of the artist “stranded” on the road but who cares? We can always paint! I always have sketchbookS with me, too; in the purse, in the car and often these days have the whole watercolor bag with me. I won’t be in the Adirondacks this year. Have fun without me if you’re going. You’re still my favorite memory from that adventure.

I always have a sketchbook and micron pen but not paints. Maybe I’ll make up a wee paint set to take as well! BTW, I love the painting you did! nancy

  5. …don’t know how I missed this post. Oh wait! yes, I do! It was “crazy-fun-week” at my house after my 55th and 5 surprise party…and what a week it was! Sooo glad you could be a part of that! …Thanks for the reminders about the sketchbook and watercolor plein air kit. I want to make one up and keep it in the car. I have been sketching thumbnails before I paint a plein air piece, and I have discovered it really DOES help a LOT!
